Inspired by the mighty Grand River in Ontario, Grand River MMA represents the flowing and changing world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), the fluidity of motion, and fluid attitude towards life.
Jiu Jitsu, which was one of the original forms of MMA, originated in feudal Japan when the martial art was developed to combat Samurais in armour. It involves using techniques such as strikes, throws, and joint locks that work to immobilize an opponent. In one of the early Jiu Jitsu manuscripts, there lived a man named Akiyama who saw a gentle willow tree in a snow storm withstand more weight than the pine trees around it. Jiu Jitsu itself means “gentle art”. Coincidentally, the Mohawk name for the Grand River, “O:se Kenhionhata:tie” means "Willow River" because of willows in the watershed.
You are a BEAST, you just don't know it yet. Once you get started, no one will stop you. We will unleash a new you on the world that is stronger, smarter, faster, and more confident than before. Our passion is contagious. What you are capable of now is only the tip of the iceberg. Whether you want to learn self defence, get in shape, or eventually compete, we are in your corner.
We want to challenge the misconceptions that martial arts are violent or too intense for certain body types. Martial arts is not all about "fighting". Most of it is about physical and mental control. It is about learning how to control yourself and your opponent. You can start learning martial arts at any age and in any shape. People get into martial arts for different reasons such as fitness, confidence, self defence, competition, etc. Mixed Martial Arts is about finding what you are good at and working with that the most, while slowly improving all of your other skills. Not only are martial arts a great way to get in shape, but, if you have any injuries, disabilities, or general weaknesses, martial arts teach you how to overcome them. The only one stopping you is YOU.
Success is not about winning fights, it's about achieving the goals that you set. We understand that adapting new fitness habits is difficult. Our goal is to change your view on fitness and martial arts, so that they become a part of your lifestyle. We strongly believe that if you practice diligently, you will progress and excel.
